CURLING - Olympic Sports

Curling: Just "curl" which means a curve as the trajectory of the stone as it glides.

History

For many centuries it has played games of stone on the ice. These stones were thrown from a line to a stake, which is the ancestor of the "dolly". This kind of painted wood keel, which has long been used to this game, has recently disappeared.

The stones, once small, became bigger and bigger, because we noticed they hunted smaller. A deep notch was used to making. The origins of curling seem distant enough

straps. Some ancient chronicles mention that in the sixteenth century Flemish immigrants in Scotland have introduced a game called Kuling to be the ancestor of curling. A painting of Pieter Brueghel Flemish, outlined in the Vienna Museum, is an image of this game in a winter village scene. Among the oldest rocks are those found in areas of Perth and Stirling in Scotland with the date -1511 - engraved on it.

Around 1700 appeared the first round stones with iron handle. And it was not until the nineteenth century they took their current form with a weight of about 20 kg. The first rules were established in Perth in 1716. In 1847 took place on a pond Castle Penicuik near Edinburgh one of the first major tournament. He gathered in a vast carnival 350 players and more than 2 500 spectators. The charter established in 1838 by the Grand Caledonian Curling Club, includes most of the current rules of the game it also contains the motto "to unite all curlers in the world one friendship. In recent years, the international rules of curling is governed by the International Curling Federation headquartered in Edinburgh. In the 19th century, the practice of curling has spread to many countries in Europe and the United States, New Zealand and especially in Canada.

The French Curling Federation was founded that year with three clubs: the CC Chamonix, DC and Paris Club Sports Font-Romeu.

The first club known

Competition

- Drag stones on the ice toward a target --

Two teams of four players (the master or 'skip', the vice captain and two curlers) each playing two stones alternating with the player of the opposing team and trying to make the most rocks closest to the bull's-eye called "home".

A game is played in ten rounds ( "end") using eight stones per set. Each team has 73 minutes.

The curler tip, hunting, hiding like bowls. He follows the instructions of the captain who tells it possibly point to target. Two crewmen before the trajectory of the stone in its long slide. Under the direction of the skip, they sweep the ice in front of the stone, warms to refine the approximation and possibly modify the trajectory.

The number of points scored during the round is determined when all 16 stones were thrown. The team that wins the first round starts at the next round. The win goes to the team that scored the most points after ten rounds.

Curling looks like bowls on ice except the ball of granite from Scotland, very hard, polished, weighs between 19 and 20 kg and it is aimed at the lowest center of a target of 3 , 66 m in diameter, with three concentric circles on an ice track 44.50 m long.

Stones

The curling stones are very hard granite of Scotland (blue, green or red), extracted from the 19th century and porphyry quarries of the island Ailsa Craig off the Ayrshire near Glasgow. They must be circular. No stone must weigh, handle and fixing included more than 19.96 kilograms and have a circumference of over 91.44 cm, its height must not be less than one eighth of its greatest circumference is 11.43 cm (29.19 cm maximum diameter). They have a plastic handle colored to distinguish them.

Player Equipment

The equipment of a player is very simple. It consists of a pair of low shoes of which is equipped with a sliding shoe and the other a non-slip soles.

Good to know: The House

is the circular area to which the stones are thrown to score points. With a diameter of 3.66 meters, is composed of four concentric circles having respectively a diameter of 3.66 meters, 2.44 meters, 1.22 meter and 0.3 meter (inner or button).

The broom

There are three kinds of brushes:

- Scots (brush), brush wipers bushy hair who seems more effective.

- The Canadian (broom) sweeper drummer with long fibers of straw-wrapped rice to fry.

- The synthetic brush lighter become the standard level of competition.

The guard area

The area of protected storage is useful in the new game system called "Free Guard Zone" which was introduced for the first time at the European Championships in 1991 in Chamonix and at the 1992 Olympic Games in Pralognan. The first players from each team (4 stones) have no right to expel the stones in that area, but will do so for those who are in the house.
