Ski Jumping - Olympic Sports

The competitions in ski jumping existed for nearly 200 years. The soldiers were the first to participate in official competitions to see who could jump the farthest. Ski jumping is the Olympic program since the first modern games in 1924.

This spectacular sport is currently reserved for men. It runs on platform of 90 meters (small platform), 120 meters (large hill) or 185 meters (flight skis) in three phases:

- Picking up speed

- Phase of flight

- The acceptance phase.

Namely:

The International Ski Federation announced in September 2009 it will send a petition to the International Olympic Committee so that it decides to include women's ski jumping at the Olympics in Sochi in 2014.

Competition

The jumper jumps 2 carries, scored by judges based on their length and style of execution (technical flight and reception)

The jumper is speeding (he must rush 15 seconds after switching on the green light) on an artificial track ends with a springboard. The discipline is based on balance, concentration, courage, coordination and control its movements. Regarding the style, a maximum of 20 points is awarded by five judges.

During the jump

The skier must keep his skis in a V (formerly parallel). The reception on the ground must be perfect, knees bent to absorb shock equal to 3 times the weight of the jumper. It calculates the distance traveled from the point of flying the midpoint between the feet when landing. Springboard of 90 m, one meter equals 2 points against 1.8 points for the 120-meter springboard. The skis are long and wide (11.5 cm) and a weight of 7.27 kilograms. They should in no case exceed the size of the jumper over 80 cm (approx. 146%).

- The skiers can reach speeds of 85 mph on the runway aerodynamic position for the K90 platform, 92 km / h for K120 and 100 km / h for the K185.

- The flying height is 10 meters above the ground on the K185 cons 5 to 6 meters on the K90 and K120.

- The jump has an average duration of 2 seconds for the K90, 4 seconds for the K120 and 7 seconds for the flight to ski. It takes 5 seconds for taking elk.

The springboards

Large Hill K 120

Height start: 138 m - Height of platform: 86 m - Length of runway: 109 m - Height of the critical point: 26 m.

K90 normal hill

Height start: 107 m - Height of platform: 86 m - runway length: 88 m - Height of the critical point: 22 m.

A competition held in France must take place on a platform approved by the FFS and the FIS in case of international competition. If a platform allows for jumps of 50 meters and another smaller platform must be built nearby.

 Point K

Visible by a red sign, indicates the recommended reception area, located 90 or 120 meters from the beak of the springboard. The jump is enhanced beyond the point K penalized below.

- Item K would not indicate the actual length of the platform but the critical point of the hill where the slope ends. Therefore means a springboard K 90 or K 120.

The body mass index: since the 2004/05 season, he is 20 instead of 18.5 before. Example: one measuring 1.85m jumpers must weigh at least 68 kg. Otherwise, it must be shorter skis.

By pinning his arms along the body rather than to the head, the Finns in 1956 introduced a new aerodynamic styling.

GOOD TO KNOW

In the 1990s, Sweden's Jan Boklöv revolutionized ski jumping after inventing a new flying technique: instead of jumping with skis parallel, he placed his skis V. Using this new technique, the Finnish prodigy 16 years, Toni Nieminen , won Olympic gold in 1992.

Equipment

Skis
? Maximum length of ski: 146% of the size of the skier.
? The curvature and shape of the skis are limited by a series of geometric features.
? Fasteners should be located so that no more than 57% of the full length of the skis up the front.
? Fasteners should be mounted on the skis parallel to the direction of travel.
? A strap that connects the ski boot prevents the floating skis during flight.

Boots
? Rod back high to stabilize and protect the ankle.
? Flexible but firm to enable the skier to perform a forward flexion during flight.

The combination
? All elements of the combination must be made of the same material.
? Must maintain a certain level of air permeability and thickness.
? The suit must fit the contours of the body when the athlete is standing.

Glasses
? Ensure protection against debris during descent and during flight

The helmet
All competitors must wear a helmet.
