Squash

History

If the Basque sports are behind virtually every modern sports balls (with the tennis court), the roots of squash are fairly controversial. However, everyone agrees that the squash as it is currently practiced, has emerged around 1850 to the private school in Harrow in England by students wishing to play the "game of extortion (from the tennis court) outside the court with a racket ball slower, softer and can crash in hand (to squash = overwrite). The first squash court was created in 1883 in Oxford by a former Harrow. The final rules were established about 1924.

The Squash Rackets Association

was created in 1928. The most prestigious tournament, the BritishOpen, is held every year since 1930 for men and since 1950 for women.

In 1980, the squash has become the No. 1 sport in England with more than 3 million practitioners before the golf and football. Parallel to this development is a real explosion in other European countries such as Sweden and Germany. Currently there are nearly 19 million practitioners worldwide.

The French Committee of squash existed from 1975 to 1980 under the responsibility of the French Tennis Federation. Since January 1981, the Committee was transformed into

French Federation Squash Racket

An independent federation.

The International Federation,

World Squash Federation (WSF)

, Was founded in 1967 and has 125 member countries.

Over 18 million people play squash in over 153 countries for approximately 50 000 short.

The main rules

The duration

Thirty minutes.

Half an hour of squash is an hour of tennis!

A record! 2 h 28 ': the longest game played by Canadian Jonathan Power, world champion in 1998.

Points

The match is played best of three or five games by the decision of the organizers. Each game is up 9 points (with 2 points difference at least): that is to say that whoever gets 9 points wins, unless, in arriving at 8-all for the first time, the raiser decides before the next service, up to 10. In this case, the first won the game anyway, the raiser must indicate their choice to the referee and his opponent.

How to score points

Only the server can score points. When a player does not make a good return or not in accordance with the rules, his opponent wins the rally. When the server is who wins, it scores a point and when it is the raiser who wins, he becomes the server.

This is until he lost an exchange, then the opponent takes the service, and so on throughout the game.

The service

The ball before being hit, to be launched into the air without touching the walls or floor. It must be served on the front wall so that it falls, if not taken volley on the floor in the quarter-short that touches the back wall which is opposite to that which is party service. At the beginning of each game and each change of service, the server may begin to serve on any side, but then he must switch side every time until he lost the service or the game ends. If the wrong side, there is no penalty and the service will apply, unless the raiser refuses and calls for its brand on the right side. A player who has only one arm can use his racket to throw the ball in the air.

A service error

A service is bad if:

1. the server has at least a foot wide in the square of service, without touching the lines of the square;

2. the ball arrives at or below the line of duty;

3. the ball touches the floor on or before the central line;

4. the ball touches the floor outside the quarter of short planned for good service.

Loss of service

The server loses service and exchange if:

1. the ball is served on or below the metal plate;

2. the ball is either dropped or thrown into the air, or if it touches the wall or floor before being struck, or if the player fails to hit the ball or hit more than once;

3. the ball touches the server, his clothes or his racket and bounced twice on the ground or been struck by the raiser.

The game

After a good service, players return the ball alternately until there has a bad back or the ball ceases to be played by the rules.

A good return

A return is good if the ball before bouncing twice on the ground, is returned by the player against the front wall above the metal plate without touching the floor, the body or clothing of the player, and provided it has not been hit twice and it is not off the court.

How to win a trade

?

A player wins a rally if:

1. The server breaks rules;

2. the adversary is not a good return of the ball;

3. the ball touches his opponent, his clothes or his racket. If the ball touches the player himself, he loses the exchange;

4. the referee gives the exchange as provided in the regulations.
