Créée en 1927 par l’homme d’affaires et grainetier, Samuel Ryder
, la RYDER CUP est l’une des plus prestigieuses compétitions de golf par équipes qui se joue sur trois jours (avant 1963 sur 2 jours) entre les meilleurs golfeurs des États-Unis et de l’Europe (avant 1973 entre les Etats-Unis et la Grande-Bretagne). En 1973, l’Irlande a rejoint la Grande-Bretagne et depuis 1979, l’épreuve est ouverte aux golfeurs continentaux par équipes de 12 joueurs (dont 2 ‘jokers’ ou 'wild-cards' choisis par le capitaine et 10 joueurs sélectionnés d’office en fonction du classement).
Cette compétition prestigieuse (800 millions de téléspectateurs par jouer en 2010) trouve son origine dans un match d'exhibition qui a eu lieu en 1926 entre deux équipes professionnelles, une américaine et une britannique, sur le parcours de Wentworth en Angleterre. La première véritable RYDER CUP s'est disputée en 1927 aux États-Unis.
La RYDER CUP se dispute alternativement aux USA et en Europe (en 1997, elle a eu lieu pour la première fois sur le continent, en Espagne sur le parcours de Valderrama de la Costa del Sol) mettant en jeu 28 points.
La RYDER CUP est la seule compétition officielle où on joue pour l’honneur sans gains.
Depuis la création de l’épreuve, les Etats-Unis mènent avec 26 victoires sur 38 RYDER CUPs disputées contre 12 victoires européennes, la dernière obtenue en 2010.
Samuel Ryder (1858-1936) ENG. Puissant homme d’affaires, grainetier et précurseur de la vente par correspondance (fleurs, plantes médicinales accessibles à tous à moindres de frais ; son slogan : ‘Tout à un penny de l’orchidée au cresson’), il est l’instigateur de la fameuse RYDER CUP (avec son professeur de golf Abe Mitchell du Verulam Golf Club situé à St Albans au nord de Londres) opposant depuis 1927 les Etats-Unis à l’Europe.

Bon à savoir : sur le sommet de la RYDER CUP trophée figure un golfeur. Il s'agit de Abe Mitchell , ancien jardinier, golfeur et ami de Samuel Ryder . Il n'a pas pu participer à la première édition en 1927 à cause d'une crise d'appendicite. Néanmoins, il a fait partie de l'équipe de la Grande-Bretagne pour les trois éditions suivantes, en 1929, 1931 et 1933.
Format :
Depuis 1927, le format de jeu a changé à maintes reprises. A partir de 1979, elle est jouée sur trois jours en match play sur 18 trous en huit foursomes, huit quatre balles et douze simples. Depuis cette année-là , elle est ouverte aux joueurs non-britanniques.La compétition dure trois jours, du vendredi au dimanche. La première équipe qui atteint le score de 14 points et demi, est déclarée gagnante du trophée. En cas d'égalité, le tenant du titre conserve le Trophée.
Il y a vingt-huit points en jeu.
- lorsqu’une équipe mène de plus de trous qu’il n’en reste à disputer, le match est terminé.
- en cas d’égalité après dix-huit trous, chaque équipe marque un demi point.
- la première équipe à gagner 15 points est déclarée vainqueur. L’équipe qui totalise le plus de points est déclarée vainqueur. Si le score final est 14-14, l’équipe tenante du titre conserve le trophée.
- une victoire vaut un point - un demi point pour un match nul - zéro point pour un match perdu.
Les matchs opposent deux équipes de 12 golfeurs chacune. Le gagnant de chaque duel remporte un point en cas de victoire, et un demi-point à chaque joueur en cas d'égalité. Certains matchs mettent aux prises deux doublettes de chaque équipe jouant avec 2 ou 4 balles. Ces duels rapportent également un point aux gagnants, un demi-point en cas d'égalité après 18 trous.
Les journées du vendredi et du samedi sont consacrées aux matchs par duos, le dimanche est réservé aux simples. Deux types de matchs se déroulent lors des compétitions en duos:
- Foursomes : les deux joueurs de la même équipe jouent alternativement la même balle . À chaque nouveau trou, le joueur donnant le départ est permuté.
- Fourball ou 4 balles, meilleure balle : Chaque joueur joue sa propre balle. Le meilleur joueur des quatre compétiteurs remporte le point pour son équipe.
Dans les doubles, les capitaines ont toute latitude pour définir les équipes. Il n'y a aucune obligation de faire jouer un joueur de l'équipe au moins un match de doubles.
Dans les simples, l'ensemble des joueurs d'une équipe joue un match.
Le système de comptabilisation utilisé pour déterminer le vainqueur d'un match lors cette compétition est le match-play. Celui-ci est basé sur les vainqueurs de chaque trou. Le vainqueur d'un trou prend un point. les résultats d'un match sont présentés de la manière suivante:
- égalité (ou all square) : 1/2 point est attribué à chaque équipe.
- 1 up ou 2 up : le match est allé au bout des 18 trous et le gagnant a terminé avec un ou deux trous d'avance
- 3 et 2 , 5 et 4 .. : les joueurs n'ont pas disputé l'ensemble des 18 trous. Le joueur gagnant menait de plus de points qu'il ne restait de trous et donc la partie s'achève. Par exemple, dans le cas 3 et 2, il ne restait plus que deux trous à disputer et le joueur gagnant menait de trois points.
Les sélections des joueurs
Pour l'édition 2010, le capitaine Corey Pavin de l'équipe des Etats-Unis a retenu les huit premiers joueurs du classement mondial plus quatre joueurs de son choix (wild-cards). Colin Montgomerie , le capitaine de l'Europe a retenu les quatre premiers Européens au classement mondial, les cinq autres premiers selon le classement européen plus trois joueurs de son choix (wild-cards).
En septembre 2010, le grand golfeur espagnol Seve Ballesteros, décédé en mai 2011, a été désigné par les Britanniques comme le plus grand joueur européen de RYDER CUP. Il recueille 32% des suffrages contre 25% à Nick Faldo et 14% à Colin Montgomerie . Ballesteros a participé à huit RYDER CUPs entre 1979 et 1995 et a été le capitaine de l'équipe qui s'était imposée lors de la première édition en Europe continentale à Valderrama en 1997.
A savoir
- Foursome : deux Européens contre deux Américains. Dans chaque équipe, les joueurs tapent en alternance dans la même balle.
- 4 balles/Four-Ball : deux Européens contre deux Américains. Chaque joueur joue sa balle ; le meilleur score des deux joueurs sur chaque trou compte.
- Match-play : il se joue trou par trou ; celui qui réalise le meilleur score sur un trou le remporte, cela jusqu’au trou n°18.
Lorsqu’une équipe mène de plus de trous qu’il n’en reste à disputer, le match est terminé.
En cas d’égalité après dix-huit trous, chaque équipe marque un demi-point.
L’équipe qui totalise le plus de points est déclarée Si le score final est 14-14, l’équipe tenante du titre conserve le trophée.
D'autres termes
- 1 up : le joueur mène d’un trou (2 up pour 2 trous d’avance).
- 1 down : le joueur est mené d’un trou (2 down pour 2 trous de retard)
- dormie : le joueur ne peut plus perdre la partie (ex : il a 3 trous d’avance tandis qu’il ne reste plus que 3 trous à disputer.
- 3 et 1 : le joueur a une avance de 3 trous alors qu’il ne reste qu’un trou à joueur. La partie s’arrête donc en sortant du green du 17e trou.
Jusqu’en 1979, l’équipe européenne n’était composée que de golfeurs anglo-saxons. Jean Van de Velde
en 1999 et Thomas Levet
en 2004, sont les seuls Français à avoir disputé la RYDER CUP. Thomas Levet
est le premier tricolore à la remporter.

Cinq pays de l'Europe continentale furent candidats à l'organisation de l'édition 2018 : la France (Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, parcours Albatros), les Pays-Bas (Lingewaal Rotterdam), l'Allemagne (Neuburg Rohrenfeld), le Portugal (Comporta Alentejo Lisbonne) et l'Espagne (Guadarrama Madrid. La Suède qui avait annoncé sa candidature y a finalement renoncé. La décision finale a été connue en mai 2011.....la France accueille la RYDER CUP, c'est seulement la deuxième fois que ce grand duel n'a pas lieu en Grande-Bretagne ou aux Etats-Unis.
A noter que la Junior RYDER CUP a été créée en 1995 mais officialisé qu'en 2002. Elle se dispute tous les deux ans selon les mêmes règles (seulement en deux jours : foursomes et quatre balles jour 1, simples jour 2) et sur les mêmes parcours identiques à celui de la RYDER CUP. Chaque équipe est composée de six filles et de six garçons (les Américains doivent avoir moins de seize ans lors de la dernière journée de la compétition tandis que les Européens doivent avoir 16 ans au 1er janvier précédent le tournoi). En huit éditions entre 1995 et 2010, l'équipe américaine mène avec 4,5 victoires contre 3,5 victoires pour le vieux continent. Parmi les jeunes ayant participé : Sergio Garcia

Il existe deux autres compétitions similaires :
- la Solheim Cup : L'équivalent féminin de la RYDER CUP, une compétition États-Unis contre Europe, qui se déroule tous les deux ans, les années où la RYDER CUP n'est pas organisée (années impaires).
- la Presidents Cup : L'autre compétition masculine par équipes, se déroulant les années impaires, sous un format similaire à la RYDER CUP et mettant face à face les États-Unis et une équipe internationale non européenne.
