The Super Bowl is the championship game of American football between the victors of both conferences NFC (National Football Conference Championship) and AFC (American Football Conference Championship) for the championship of the NFL.
It was created in 1966 as the AFL-NFL World Championship Game. However, the media and football enthusiasts prefer the name "Super Bowl". It was not until the third edition of the grand finale to appear officially named the Super Bowl. Before 1966, there were two major leagues, the NFL and the AFL (American Football League) who have come together to form one organization, the National Football League.
The team winning the Super Bowl receives the Vince Lombardi
Trophy, named for the legendary coach of the Green Bay Packers, winners of the first two editions. The trophy was so named in 1970, following the death of Lombardi.
The years of the Super Bowl are usually indicated in Roman numerals.
The first edition (I) was held January 15, 1967 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California between the Kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay Packer (35-10 to the Packers). At the end of the meeting, called the best player in the game (MVP).
The 44th final of the Superbowl (XLIV) was held February 7, 2010 at the Miami Sun Life Stadium between the Indianapolis Colts and the Saints in New Orleans.
The Indianapolis Colts have qualified by beating the New York Jets in the conference final AFC. At their last appearance at the Super Bowl, they won the Super Bowl XLI, which ended the 2006 season.
Saints of New Orleans have qualified after defeating the Minnesota Vikings in the final after extra time in the NFC conference. They played and won the Super Bowl for the first time.
